Water is essential for our body's proper function, and we rarely drink enough of it. Most of us more easily reach out for sugary drinks, yet experts all agree that we now consume more sugar than is good for us.

If you find water difficult to swallow, you can jazz up a jug of tap water without resorting to sweet flavourings.

  • 2For fans of the summer cup

To a jug or bottle of water, add a few slices of cucumber, mint sprigs, halved strawberries, and a sliced orange.

  • 3For caffeine junkies

Add two tea bags of your favourite tea to a jug of water, and leave to steep in the fridge for one hour. Remove the tea bags when the water is flavoured to your taste.

If you are hooked on cordials, cut out the sugar by adding a few drops of rose water or orange flower water to ice cold water.
